Somethings brewing

Interested in art competitions I decided to register and apply and submit a piece of artwork to TheCoffee Art Project, which is a high profile art competition inviting artists to interpret the theme of coffee.

Artists at all levels can enter one piece of artwork that connects to 'coffee' and/or 'coffee shop' experience. There is no restriction on media used; sculpture, painting, installation, photography and mixed media art works are all eligible and welcome, providing that they have a justifiable link to coffee.

The Coffee Art Project is successful in London, Milan, Amsterdam and Paris and so far, more than 400 inspirational submissions have been received. The competition now enters its seventh year in London and provides a great opportunity for talented artists to gain high profile exposure and showcase their work to a vast new audience while raising valuable funds to support Project Waterfall.

So, I painted a picture for my submission, I didn't have a lot of time to do this, so had to make do with a simple painting.

The top 30-40 pieces will be exhibited at The London Coffee Festival from the 28th-31stMarch and if you win you get £1,000, Two short-listed runners-up will get £250 each and the London Coffee Festival visitor's award is £250, so better get going

After sending my piece, I received an email to say I was shortlisted and was awarded two VIP tickets, a goodie bag and other free passes. I was so excited and as the competition results would be announced on 31stMarch, Mothering Sunday, I couldn't think of a better Mummy’s day than a trip to London with my family.

We travelled to the Truman’s Brewery, wandered into the hustle and bustle of The London Coffee Festival, the smell was amazing and as we filled up our goodie bags with free samples and sipped all the new brews, we made our way up to the gallery.

Buzzing with excitement and an overload of coffee, we scanned the walls for my piece and there it was. This was the first time I have ever entered an art competition and as we waited for the results, I wondered what things I would buy with my prize money.

Alas I didn't win, didn't win anything but to be honest the winner and the other runners-ups were a lot better.

To me the best bit was seeing my work on the wall, being there with my family and sipping proudly on a coffee margarita in the VIP bar. Next year I will spend more time on a piece and enter and who knows I could be walking away with the winner’s prize and a caffeine headache!
